I just flipped through TBN, my favorite comedy channel, and one of their "history" authorities was telling the son of the (homo) Paul Crouch that Alexeis de Tocqueville's seminal Democracy in America states that the reason the US was different from Europe was because of, get this, FAITH!
He even brought out the book and pointed to it! I guess that proves it then. Forget that crass property rights and common man/ anti-aristocracy shit THAT TOCQUEVILLE ACTUALLY WROTE ABOUT, it was Christianity that separated the US from Europe. I'm laughing so hard I almost spit up!
Jesus would be so proud...

Yes, those godly, Christian colonists were fleeing Europe to get away from all those animists, Zoroastrians, Buddhists, Hindus....
ReplyDeleteGranted, Democracy in America does speak a lot to religion in the US. But Toqueville states that separation of church and state promoted that. I guess I was laughing more at the notion that these dominionists were using a book that totally contradicts their goals as supporting literature.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely - excellent point, M. Squid. I just found it especially funny that the "history authority" was extremely disingenuous (to put it politely) to speak as if Europe was NOT a sycophant factory for Mr. Jesus at the time. Plus, I just like the way "Zoroastrian" looks & sounds.
ReplyDeleteSo, do we think these guys actually believe this shite, or are they just continuing the big lie to keep themselves employed? Do they want to believe so badly the surrender their brains? It boggles...
ReplyDeleteThe whole evangelical movement is based on the concept that one has to believe believers, esp preachers. As Hitchens has said, they preach credulity to the ignorant. So whatever they hear that matches their "Christian worldview," they accept.
ReplyDeleteListening to Christer radio, you should hear the shit they say regarding not listening to unbelievers, conceding to the authority of pastors/preachers, and blindly accepting "the word of god" with the "faith of a child." It's so dangerous it's scary.
