If I can't have my way, I'll sue

Orwellian Evolution Lawsuit

The University of California Museum of Paleontology has a website titled, Understanding Evolution For Teachers, and on that site is a page addressing the oft-repeated fundamentalist claim that evolution and religion are mortal enemies: Misconceptions: Evolution and Religion are Incompatible.

The misconception that one always has to choose between science and religion is incorrect. Of course, some religious beliefs explicitly contradict science (e.g., the belief that the world and all life on it was created in six literal days); however, most religious groups have no conflict with the theory of evolution or other scientific findings. In fact, many religious people, including theologians, feel that a deeper understanding of nature actually enriches their faith. Moreover, in the scientific community there are thousands of scientists who are devoutly religious and also accept evolution.

Well, the idea that religion and evolution can coexist peacefully is absolute anathema to some, and now a “schoolteacher” is suing UC, with the bizarre Orwellian argument that this statement is unconstitutional: Cal Web site draws anti-evolution lawsuit.
Even the odious Discovery Institute is putting in its 2¢.

I see SCOTUS on the horizon

Appeals Court Overturns D. C. Gun Ban

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal appeals court overturned the District of Columbia's long- standing handgun ban Friday, rejecting the city's argument that the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias.

In a 2-1 decision, the judges held that the activities protected by the Second Amendment "are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual's enjoyment of the right contingent" on enrollment in a militia.

The ban on owning handguns went into effect in 1976. Read it all @ BREITBART.COM.

Tough questions, great answers

Ed Brayton, long-time evolution defender and libertarian (but, sadly, Duke fan), answers serious questions concerning free speech in ways I wish I could. Check it out.

Hate crime and hate speech laws disturb me to no end. Yelling "fire" in a crowded theater is not the same as yelling "flamer." And if someone causes me to physically suffer because I am gay, punishing that person for premeditatedly causing me to suffer will suffice. Like premeditated murder, the reason is irrelevant beyond the trial: you thought about it before you did it.

Oh, so THAT'S why you separate church and state...

Lonnie Latham is another odious christer preacher who railed against homos...until he was caught soliciting sex from an undercover cop of, shall we say, a male persuasion. Anti-gay bigot preachers actually being homos is standard news now, but this isn't.

It turns out that Latham's lawyers are actually arguing that Lawrence vs. Texas, the Supreme Court ruling that overturned sodomy laws, also protects him from being arrested for asking a policeman to go to his hotel room for oral sex. Now I don't think he did anything legally wrong here, but he would have if his Southern Baptists had their christer theocracy in place. And the SoB's railed against that Supreme Court decision. It's just too rich!!!

Oh, and the ACLU filed a brief for Lonnie's side. The "Anti-Christian Liberal Union" as they call it. Ha! You just can't make this shit up...
