Private investors seem to think so, to the tune 0f $1.5 billion. The BJCC would get the arena, an "entertainment district," a new hotel, and some condos. Expect our dumb-ass city government to fuck this up in some way.
Of course, what we really need are Krauts making metal. Remember when we made steel here?
It's just so strange. They let Legion Field go to hell. They mismanage public facilities like Vulcan and then think the state's taxpayers should pay for a stadium that will host a bottom-tier bowl game, sad UAB games, and the high school championships. True enough I want Birmingham to move up the list of southern cities, and it'd be kewl to have a nice stadium there, but would the business it attracts (the SEC Championship game would be a possibility) justify the cost? The NFL is not coming to Alabama, but I'm sure we'll get a team in the next fly-by-night football league. I'm ambivalent at best.
