Oh. My. God.

As if it weren't enough that Neil Gaiman's super-creepy children's story "Coraline" is being turned into a film by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas guy). And that the movie would feature the voices of Saunders and French and Ian McShane. Now I learn that They Might Be Giants is doing the music for it. Sweet!

In Honor of the Catholic League...

...I present this song by Mojo Nixon. I would argue that this song is far more offensive than choco-Jesus, and I've been singing along to it for almost a decade (from Mojo Nixon and Jello Biafra's "Prairie Home Invasion").

It just occurred to me, is choco-Jesus offensive because it suggests that Jesus was "b-l-a-c-k?" I think that may explain a lot...

It's a great event with great food, and it's for a good cause (I presume; don't ask me what it is...I don't do causes).

Ethiopia: Muslims beat Christian evangelist to death

Christian proselytizing is a capital offense under Islamic law. "Ethiopian Evangelist Beaten to Death by Militant Muslims: Militant Wahabbi Islamists Drag Christian Evangelist into Mosque and Beat Him to Death," from Christian Newswire, with thanks to Tom:

WASHINGTON, Mar. 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) has just learned that an Ethiopian evangelist named Tedase was beaten to death by militant Muslims on Monday, March 26th, as he and two young women were on a street evangelism assignment in Jimma, Ethiopia. This marks the second time in six months that Christians residing in Southeast Ethiopia have been attacked and killed by extremist (Wahabbi) Muslims.

Eddie Izzard - Easter and Christmas

Where's the Crown of Twizzlers?

Someone in New York decided to be funny and made a life-size sculpture of Jesus on the cross--in chocolate. The Catholic League calls it "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever."

Really? Worse than the Inquisition? Worse than the Catholic Church's embarrassing Nazi past? Worse than Benny Hinn's hair?

For those of you confused, the bible "records" Jesus as stating that his followers will be persecuted. Normal, thinking people aren't impressed by this: he was a rogue religious cultist, one of many claiming to be the savior of the Jews, and Rome did not smile upon rebellious cult leaders or their followers. Instead, they typically crucified them. Sound familiar?

But, modern Christers, living in the richest and most religiously permissive country ever AND making up over 70% of the population of said country, have to come up with some "persecution" to convince themselves that they are good Christers (and convince followers to send money of "support" for those poor persecuted preachers). Thus, prohibiting public school administrators from authoritatively subjecting students to any form of prayer, for reasons any rational person can understand, becomes a campaign by evil secularists to take their gods out of schools. And thus, someone making fun of pagan chocolate Ishtar bunnies becomes an "assault" on Christer sensibilities.

No word yet on if James Dobson is offended, but we know that Fred Thompson couldn't be.

I see dumb people.

Democrats To Propose Largest Tax Hike In History

House Democrats today will propose the largest tax hike in American history, one which will add more poor people to the tax rolls and which will further burden millions of small businesses. They will position this as fiscal discipline while refusing to trim federal spending, according to Robert Novak:

The new Democratic majority begins dancing the next phase of the tax-and-spend minuet in the House of Representatives today. Following the example set by their Senate brethren last Friday, House Democrats will adopt a budget resolution containing the largest tax increase in U.S. history amid massive national inattention.

Nobody's tax payment will increase immediately, but the budget resolutions set a pattern for years ahead. The House version would increase non-defense, non-emergency spending by $22.5 billion for next fiscal year, with such spending to rise 2.4 percent in each of the next three years. To pay for these increases, the resolution would raise taxes by close to $400 billion over five years -- about $100 billion more than what was passed in the Senate.

There's hope for Europe (and Bromide, the recent Maoist convert)

Political correctness is killing our freedoms
Telegraph.co.uk

Europe's citizens must be on their guard against political correctness and moralising politicians, says the European Commission President José Manuel Barroso in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

The former Portuguese premier and centre-Right politician is concerned that freedom can be the loser in European culture wars over climate change, cheap air travel, Islam and free speech.

"We should be aware of people who, sometimes for good reasons, try to establish what I call private moral codes, for this or that, be it climate change, religious behaviour or any kind of social behaviour," he says.

Mr Barroso, a former Maoist student firebrand who fought against the Portuguese dictatorship in the early 1970s, still regards himself as a freedom fighter, even when the calls for bans or restrictions are in a worthy cause, such as global warming or respect for Muslim communities.
...
But Mr Barroso backs the right to offend.

In fact, yes. The once relatively unknown Gens. Ulysses S. Grant, Curtis LeMay and George S. Patton all found renown only after replacing their failed predecessors. Must-See Global Warming TV

As Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth” becomes mandatory viewing for many U.S. school children and nears becoming the “official truth” about global warming, it comes as most welcome news that an absolutely gripping film rebuttal has made its international debut, much to the chagrin of true believers in man-made climate change.

Last week, the UK’s Channel 4 premiered a 75-minute film entitled, “The Great Global Warming Swindle.” Through interviews with prize-winning climate experts and others, this masterful documentary explains the origins of global warming alarmism; debunks claims of man-made global climate change; exposes the motivations of organizations, scientists and activists sounding the alarm; and explains why it’s been extremely difficult, if not downright dangerous, for climate scientists to question global warming orthodoxy publicly.

The entire film, which is creating quite a stir among tens of thousands of web viewers, can be viewed online at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4520665474899458831.

Al Gore Challenged to International TV Debate on Global Warming

PERTH, Scotland, March 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In a formal invitation sent to former Vice-President Al Gore's Tennessee address and released to the public, Lord Monckton has thrown down the gauntlet to challenge Gore to what he terms "the Second Great Debate," an internationally televised, head-to-head, nation-unto-nation confrontation on the question, "That our effect on climate is not dangerous." (http://ff.org/centers/csspp/docs/20070316_monckton.html)

Monckton, a former policy adviser to Margaret Thatcher during her years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, said, "A careful study of the substantial corpus of peer-reviewed science reveals that Mr. Gore's film, An Inconvenient Truth, is a foofaraw of pseudo-science, exaggerations, and errors, now being peddled to innocent schoolchildren worldwide."

...

The arena of the glittering "Second Great Debate" will be the elegant, Victorian-Gothic Library of the Oxford Museum of Natural History, which was the setting for the "Great Debate" between the natural scientist T. H. Huxley and Bishop "Soapy Sam" Wilberforce on the theory of evolution, following the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species. Lord Monckton says he chose this historic venue "not only because the magnificent, Gothic architecture will be a visually-stunning setting for the debate but also because I hope that in this lofty atmosphere the caution and scepticism of true science will once again prevail, this time over the shibboleths and nostrums of the false, new religion of climate alarmism."

Appeals Court Overturns D. C. Gun Ban

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal appeals court overturned the District of Columbia's long- standing handgun ban Friday, rejecting the city's argument that the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias.

In a 2-1 decision, the judges held that the activities protected by the Second Amendment "are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual's enjoyment of the right contingent" on enrollment in a militia.

The ban on owning handguns went into effect in 1976. Read it all @ BREITBART.COM.

Star Wars and Atheism

For some reason, I put in Return of the Jedi tonight. I had not really watched it since I'd seen the three prequels. As lacking as those films were in the character bonding that defined the first three movies, I was able to read in (and I fully accept that the following is just that) a few humanistic morals that the total of the 6 films leads to. They are as follows:

1. The Enlightened Defiance: Luke walked into Jabba's lair with the same open defiance that we saw with Obi Wan and his battle with General Grievous. In both, we saw a confrontation, despite the odds, of one fighting for his morals (the Republic/his friends) over those who were amoral (power-hungry bureaucrats/government-enabled criminals). In both, the moral individual stands defiant and wins.

2. The Enlightened Choice: When given a choice of ignoring "religious" visions of his loved one dying and of turning to the dark side, Anakin chose religious promises over reason. Those promises never came to be, only because of his religious zeal. However, Luke--after defeating his father in battle--chose certain death by the hands of a fascist zealot overlord over religious servitude, without thought of the fate of his friends.

3. The Enlightened Renouncement and Sacrifice: Vader, when given the choice of eternal life verses the life of his son, chose to renounce his religious servitude and chose instead to cast his mage down a pit. Doing so cost him his life, but he was able to remove the mask of oppressive religiosity (the mask that cost him his friends and his love) and see reality as it truly was once more before his death.

Of course with any folklore, modern or ancient, you can read into it as much as you want.

Irreducible Complexity is a Scientific Revolution!

That is, if you live in the 1920's. And the revolution was in the growing field of evolutionary biology, not in the scientifically vacuous political debate over intelligent design. I rediscovered this post from Talk.Origins that reviews how Michael Behe's "irreducible complexity" was predicted by geneticists almost 90 years before his vomit-inducing book "Darwin's Black Box." Amazing how a deluded religious kook can make a good pile of money claiming he found something that debunks evolution...something predicted by "evolutionists" decades before as a likely product of evolutionary processes (and a decade before the modern synthesis).

Václav Klaus on Catastrophic Global Warming

"Luboš Motl, a Harvard professor and physicist recently translated a refreshingly frank interview with Václav Klaus, second president of the Czech Republic, on his view of the alleged threat of global warming [HT: Drudge Report]. The original interview appeared in Hospodáøské noviny, a Czech economics daily

Q: On Wednesday, the European Commission has approved carbon dioxide caps for new cars. One week earlier, the U.N. IPCC climate panel released a report that has described, once again, the global warming as one of the major threats for the whole civilization. The Stern report about similar threats was published before that. And you suddenly say that the global warming is a myth. Try to explain, how did you get this idea, Mr President?

A: It's not my idea. Global warming is a myth and I think that every serious person and scientist says so. It is not fair to refer to the U.N. panel. IPCC is not a scientific institution: it's a political body, a sort of non-government organization of green flavor. It's neither a forum of neutral scientists nor a balanced group of scientists. These people are politicized scientists who arrive there with a one-sided opinion and a one-sided assignment. Also, it's an undignified slapstick that people don't wait for the full report in May 2007 but instead respond, in such a serious way, to the summary for policymakers where all the "but's" and "if's" are scratched, removed, and replaced by oversimplified theses. This is clearly such an incredible failure of so many people, from journalists to politicians... If the European Commission is instantly going to buy such a trick, we have another very good reason to think that the countries themselves, not the Commission, should be deciding about similar issues.
...
Q: Don't you believe that we're ruining our planet?

A: I will pretend that I haven't heard you. Perhaps only Mr. Al Gore may be saying something along these lines: a sane person hardly."

Voices of Reason

A BBC4 documentary will air this week that we must get our hands on - The Great Global Warming Swindle. In it film-maker Martin Durkin argues that the theory of man-made global warming has become such a powerful political force that other explanations for climate change are not being properly aired. One of the scientists involved is UAH's John Christy, a NASA guy & a climate-change contrarian of the first order (and a house favorite).
Update: and another.

Um...Dr. Wells...uh...your slip is showing...`

Jonathan Wells, the HIV denier/ID proponent who got a PhD in biology just so he could spread lies about evolutionary theory "with authority," so to speak, opened his mouth and stated the truth. I guess a one-day calender is right 24 hours in a year (if you buy into that "heliocentric theory" nonsense).

Anyway, the Cato Institute sponsored a debate between him and Michael Shermer. I'm sure it was a hoot. But then an audience member asked Wells a VERY GOOD FUCKING QUESTION: what was the alternative for the evidence for natural selection?

Well's answer:

“I don’t think I’m obligated to propose an alternate theory,” Wells publicly stated. “I don’t pretend to have an alternate theory that explains the history of life.”

In other words, my asserting that you are wrong is all I have to do. I need not present a model, let alone evidence for it.

And when Alabama blocks an Auburn field goal attempt, Alabama gets 3 points, right?

So since Wells is a fan of false dilemmas, which is he: a racist, fetus-eating pedophile unicorn or a pathetic superstitious fraud? Remember, there are ONLY two choices, and if one of them is wrong...

Parola Alla Vostra Terza Madre

Former giallo director Dario Argento (sorry, but did you see The Card Player? Old Dario has been out for the last few of his films) has re-possessed his body, slapped his wine-addled gray matter back into its natural twisted state, and finished the third of the Three Witches trilogy. Named The Third Mother, it will be released early this year in Italy; hopefully we'll get to see it here before 2010. It stars Asia, of course, and our favorite "the blood of these whores is killing me" mega-B star Udo Kier (but not as Dr. Mandel).

Those who have gotten a sneak peak at the script are pretty positive about it, and Cannes wants it ready for a special viewing. Dario has stated that being able to do the "Masters of Horror" stuff for Showtime kicked his imagination back into gear, so sacrifice something to Showtime when you get a chance. Lets hope the experience also kicked his eyes back into focus so he can return to his true gift: making perversely-lit gross-out that creepifies even us jaded horror fans.

Of course, if you haven't seen the first two movies, you should be cast into a room full of razor wire. First.
